Advice Needed, Flying Offshore of the Big Island

I always launched from the shore - either cliffs or beach. The wind did change, but was inconsistent. It usually blows towards the shore, so if you are near cliffs, it may be stronger as it hits the cliffs and rolls upward - know what I mean? I don't exactly recall the maximum distance I flew...

Advice Needed, Flying Offshore of the Big Island

Hi @rmcpherson - here's some information that will hopefully be useful: I took a trip to Hawaii in April 2018 and came away with some awesome drone photos and videos - I've included a few samples below. Although I didn't go to the Big Island (went to Oahu and Kauai), much of what I learned...

    First restricted use airspace authorization

I must have gotten lucky. On March 9th I received an authorization that I had requested on January 7th - so, about 60 days. And this was for a wide-area authorization for Dallas' DFW airport's Class B airspace. I had heard they weren't approving Class B wide-area authorizations but obviously...

Battery Charging - fire proof bags?

I bought 2 of these; they have good reviews on Amazon and I've been very happy with the quality: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M030181/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

FAA Provides a Timetable for LAANC Going Nationwide

For those of you having to wait a while, you might go ahead and give it a try to get an Authorization thru FAA's Drone Zone (FAADroneZone). On Friday I received approval for an application I put in on Jan. 7th - so, about 2 months. And the Authorization is for DFW airport's entire Class B...

Thought I’d better show what I do

Excellent editing! And I like that song by VAST; good choice.

Have you received permission to fly in a zero cell?

Steve - I'm in the Love Field area too. Can you share how long it took you to get the authorization, when you applied, and was it a wide area DAL authorization? I'm still waiting on mine.

Formula for best shot of a tall building

Very helpful advice. Are you just running your laptop off its batteries, or are you powered? And what method do you find the most efficient / cost effective for uploading while in transit?

FAA is certainly trying to catch up

I saw another post saying I should use my existing FAA account login. Turns out that worked. Logged in and now see my existing drones.

FAA is certainly trying to catch up

On the DroneZone site, does anyone know how to add existing registrations to their system? I've already got 2 drones registered with the FAA as commercial drones; I want to get them into the DroneZone system so I can apply for waivers there. Any advice appreciated.

Some encouraging words about LAANC from the FAA

Thanks for posting, @AerialEye - I heard him speak about LAANC at the InterDrone conference last fall but hadn't heard any updates since then. LAANC can't come soon enough. I'm in an area with overlapping Class B and C airports which significantly limits where I can fly commercially. This is...

    Hello from Mechanicsville, Virginia

You must be freezing in Virginia! We've had unusually cold weather in Dallas which has kept me from flying much. Like you, John, I'm looking forward to being warmer and flying more.

All the best from Dallas, Texas, USA

Throughout my life, photography has been a passion. I’ve taken photos as a hobby and commercially for over 40 years now. These days I focus on business product photos and corporate training videos, photos of people and events, and editorial and art photography. In the spring of 2017 I added...
