I have never tried, but can I fly the I2 using just the FPV and not mounting the camera?

Think I answered my own questions. Flys but give an error indicating there may be a gimbal issue and call DJI. I assume you can safely ignore that

Yes...but, why would you want to fly like that? What benefit does it give you that flying with the camera doesn't?

Wanted to test a new third party gimbal that was carrying a Flir VuePro Thermal sensor. The mount they sent is a little off so I did not want the cameras to bump into each other. New mount on the way

I've test flown mine without the camera, wasn't a problem.
