Coworker and I were recently tasked with mapping a rail yard. This happens to be extremely close to an airport. We are used to flying in the DC Restriction zone and know all of the requirements to do so. This rail yard is outside of those restrictions and we were under the guidance that to conduct our flight only LAANC approval is necessary given the area. When the LAANC was first submitted through Aloft it came back with "Pending FAA Review". About a week later we received approval. Day of the flight we went out to the site and conducted business as usual in the safest manner. We had filed a NOTAM and we called for a briefing by FAA Flight Service Station. Throughout the flight we noticed the landing airplanes seemed close to our area but not to where something dangerous could actually happen. We called it early out of erring on the side of caution. Questions
After LAANC approval is it really on us to decided what is safe and what is not so close to an airport landing path?
Is the tower or FAA able to see the drone? Are they watching?
The whole experience seemed very loose to me.
