At MissionGO, our top priority is safety. MissionGO has been awarded one of the largest UAS inspection contracts in the world to inspect utilities and infrastructure utilizing UAS to accurately and efficiently report and triage wildfire and power outage risks. The Visual Observer (VO) must have an exceptional commitment to safety, can be held accountable for flight operations, and be relied upon for their ability to assist the RPIC (Remote Pilot in Command). MissionGO VO’s need to be highly motivated individuals who may possess an FAA Part 107 certificate and/or aspire to. All flight operations shall have a designated Visual Observer to work closely and assist the RPIC in collecting usable high-quality imagery of specific assets, coordinate flights with MissionGO flight operations, and deliver the collected data in a timely fashion.

A successful teammate will abide by MissionGO’s safety rules and regulations to oversee their individual flight operation while in the field. As the Visual Observer, he/she must accurately report and reassess the work environment, including airspace and weather considerations. The VO is expected to maintain awareness of the ever-changing weather conditions and monitor them during flight operations.

NOTE! The performance of work on this job takes place in remote areas of California. Candidates are housed at different locations during the contract period and would be able to return home periodically as time permits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • VO duties always require continuous awareness of the aircraft in such a manner as to be able to discern aircraft attitude and trajectory; and help coordinate the safety of all persons involved in operations.
  • Communication with the RPIC in reference to surroundings, aircraft trajectory, and mission goals.
  • The Visual Observer must have the confidence to properly communicate potential issues to the RPIC and problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles.
  • Make the UAS and pertinent documentation available for FAA inspection or testing.
  • Report to the FAA within 10 days of any operation that results in at least serious injury, loss of consciousness, or property damage of at least $500.
  • Report any incident, no matter how minor, to the Operations Manager or their designee.
  • Conduct a preflight inspection, including specific aircraft and control station systems checks to ensure the UAS is in a condition for safe operation.
  • Conduct aircraft, battery, and firmware care and maintenance.
  • Ensure the UAS complies with the existing registration requirements specified in FAA Part 91/Part 107.
  • Assure that all required maintenance has been performed and documented.
  • Ensure all flight operations are conducted in accordance with relevant Federal, state, and local regulations and all conditions in this manual.
  • Conduct or monitor pre-flight and post-flight inspections and briefings for all flight operations.
  • Ensure that all necessary flight planning activities are completed and that all notification requirements have been fulfilled.
  • Complete accurate and timely reporting of assets collected through MissionGO assigned programs (ie: Field Maps; AlarisPro)
  • Properly assess and coordinate asset collections in a safe and timely manner by analyzing maps and problem-solving collections.
  • Duties and all work will be accomplished under the direction of the Project Manager and in partnership with others to be determined.

Skills and Competencies

  • Possession of an FAA Part 107 Certificate, and/or aspire to obtain one.

  • Ability to pass an FAA Medical Exam (Third Class).

  • Travel required; ability to operate in field conditions and inclement weather, and safely and effectively complete aerial inspections of distribution poles/structures.
  • Work as a team with the designated Remote Pilot in Command, encouraging effective communication and a friendly work environment, and maintaining a professional standard for our customers and the representation of MissionGO.
  • Problem solves equipment issues, organization of structure collection, and managing daily tasks.
  • Complete detailed and full inspections of designated structures and maintain issued equipment and report any issues immediately.
  • Accurately report daily collections and accurately detail collections through ArcGIS systems in a timely manner.
  • 40-hour work week – Ability to operate in field conditions and inclement weather.

    • The work environment will constantly change and will include but is not limited to, extensive exposure to sun, heat, cold, and wind.
    • Often employees will be faced with considerable terrain challenges such as aggressive elevation changes, up and down, and different footing challenges such as soft sandy bases, rocky bases, and thick vegetation.

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long hours and work in rough outdoor environments.
