After the flurry of conversation over the last few days regarding business models and plans and such, I'm hoping this post is timely.
My field is Architectural Photography, and my interest in sUAS was piqued when DJI introduced their Phantom 4 Pro and Advanced with its 20 megapixel image. 12 and 13 MPs weren't going to work for my still photography. But with 20 I can scrape by (my current standard is the 36 MP from my Nikon D800, soon to be replaced with the 49 MP D850).
Many of you mapping and thermo and cinema guys will be amused that I coveted the P4A as a big tripod, but it's true. I would guess the over the last 15 years, half of the architectural images I shot were from the roof of my GMC Suburban. That got me perhaps 10 feet above ground, but it is a world of difference. Imagine my fascination with a 25 or 40 foot tripod and the availability of oblique aerials in the bargain!
So some of these recent discussions regarded marketing, and email marketing works well for me. I use ConstantContact, but there are a bunch of email marketing apps out there. And they are inexpensive. Anyway...I send a monthly email newsletter that I call "The Great Shot of the Month". It features an image from a recent shoot, along with a brief backstory. My email for August is displayed below and specifically addresses drones and the expanded opportunities they provide.
I'd love to here what works for you. Thanks...

fine photographic illustration of architecture, engineering, and interior designDear Mike,
About this project:
In 2014, Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer donated $20M to the Cal Poly SLO
College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. This is the fifth-largest Ag School in the country with 4,000 undergraduate students. The school supports equestrian, dressage, and polo teams.
The project consists of a new stallion barn and foaling barn, including laboratory, offices, and student lounge. There are also five new riding/training pens. The featured piece of the facility is the new 60,000 square foot covered riding arena.
About the photography:
In a recurring theme for me recently, the images below were accomplished with a drone. The property is on a hillside, and there are three different levels of the topography of the project. In the first image below, the new stallion barn in the foreground aligns with the riding arena in the distance. How else could you relate these two structures except from the air?
In the second image shot at dusk, the only viable alternative would be to shoot from a crane on the driveway below, which is about 25 feet below grade.
You can easily see how the "Small Unmanned Aerial Systems" phenomenon has expanded the world of compositional choices for creative professionals.
