    Inadvertent entry into Authorization Zone

I’d heard stories about getting pre-authorized at the DJI website but then the drone refusing to take off, regardless. But the existence of phantom AZ’s was something new to me, and completely unexpected. I hope DJI listens and cleans up those issues, and more importantly, changes the app’s...

    Inadvertent entry into Authorization Zone

Well, my concern is that even though I got a warning on my display about an authorization zone being 300 feet away, the DJI map did not show any nearby authorization zones. The nearest zone, according to the DJI map, was at least 0.5 miles away. I have attached a map with the area in question...

    Inadvertent entry into Authorization Zone

I was getting ready to fly my Mavic Pro in Class G space, but before I took off I got a warning in the display that there is an Authorization Zone 300 feet away, and RTH and other functions may not operate properly if I entered it. Has anyone entered an authorization zone inadvertently, and...

    Participation Waiver

I'm guessing they could claim that the drone distracted them. I would definitely have them sign an acknowledgement that there will be aerial photography taking place during the event. Maybe the event organizer can include it with the documents that will have the riders sign before the ride.

FAA - LAANC Authorizations for NIGHT Flight in Controlled Airspace (temporary)

Something is unclear to me: How does one specify the time and duration of the night time operations? Does a daylight LAANC approval for an arbitrary time/duration, combined with the National Authorization, allow same-date night time operations of any time/duration up to midnight? And do you...

    Part 107 Test/Recurrency go LIVE 4/6/21... Important notes . . .

Just a note, that, to my understanding, if your certification has lapsed, you must retake the first-time test, and not the recurrent test, to be properly certified. Not sure how they enforce this. It doesn’t appear that the website checks if your certification is current, before issuing the new...

    Part 107 Test/Recurrency go LIVE 4/6/21... Important notes . . .

The new expiration date resets to 24 calendar months after the last test you passed. This means that your recertification expires on the end of the month in which you last took the test, two years later. So, if you took (and passed) your test any time in April 2021, the new expiration date is...

FAA Release NEW rules for UAS Operations

Although I didn’t see it specifically mentioned in the Rules Summary (and I did not go through the entire body of the rules), it appears that folks whose certificate is not up for renewal yet, should be able to take the recurrent training early, and be able to do night ops without the need of a...

    Strobe Placement

The issue I see is that you are required to see your drone to maintain VLOS, and other aircraft must also be able to see your drone. A single strobe would be partially blocked, unless you can set it up high on a post that you attach to your drone, to enable near 360° visibility. Best to use two...

    Strobe Placement

Here are some pictures on how I place my strobes: I have the dual LED units from Firehouse Technology. They feel kind of flimsy, having no housing, but on the plus side, they are lightweight, and fairly small. I am careful when plugging and unplugging for charging, and when I attach them...

    Strobe Placement

I agree, if you have enough satellites locked, you should be fine. That’s the metric I use. I have a Mavic Pro, and I place one strobe in front and on top of the craft, and one facing down on one of the rear arms. Never noticed any change in the number of locked satellites before and after...

Confused about Part 107 VLOS requirements

Thanks for the links, Earthman. You are correct. FAA Advisory Circular AC107-2, paragraph 5.7.2.2 clearly states that communication devices such as two-way hand-held radios are permitted. So, whether you can daisy-chain VOs to extend the UAS operation BVLOS of PIC and Person Manipulating the...

Confused about Part 107 VLOS requirements

You can't have multiple VOs who communicate with you via radio. It is expressly required that the VO is near the PIC and the person manipulating the controls.
