Hey all; I have a potential job flying my Mavic 2 Pro for the contractor that gets the bid for this job:

The project includes replacement of over 4,300 linear feet of water mains with new 8-inch diameter mains, as well as replacement of associated water services and fire hydrants.

This is in a residential section of town. Half of the linear feet are on a street headed East/West; the other half are on a street headed North/South. (They are connected, so the full path is a big "L" shape.) Lots of trees lining both sides of both streets, some light poles, etc.

(Here's what it looks like, but this is not the actual streets (or even the same state!) for security.)

The path itself is easy enough to setup in DD; but when I do the simulation (within DD) the sim drone flies to the 1st waypoint, points North, flies sideways (to the right) on the East/West street, then backwards on the North/South street.

My question is:

Is that what the drone will do in a real flight? Fly sideways?

Since side obstical avoidance is only available in active track or tripod mode on the Mavic 2 Pro, that would cause the flight to last like, I dunno...17 years? :D

Thoughts?

It's a glitch in the interface of the simulation. I think it might have something to do with the turn to take a focus image, and it just never turns back. It should fly with a heading to the next waypoint. That being said, I would recommend shooting oblique images from the opposite ROW if there are a lot of trees and any of the utility lines are in between the road and the ROW. You can do this with a Litchi waypoint mission and a custom heading.

Thanks; yeah, seems like a Litchi waypoint mission is gonna work best, and yes, I'll need to do obliques to get under the trees. Unfortunately, it'll have to fly sideways, which is what I wanted to avoid. Oh well; I'll just slow it way down and walk along with it to keep it in line of sight and keep it safe.

I like your mindset. Crabbing always requires a little special attention. Just to clarify you will want a nadir flight as well. I have done many flights of this nature and a nadir line down each side of the road and then an oblique down each looking at the other side of the road does the trick. Are you going to use any ground control? Even if you don't shoot them it would be good to have some solid manual tie points.
