Mapping a lumber tie and constuction mat yard

Hey, fairly new to mapping and looking to do a job in a timber yard. They need accurate counts of the stacked ties and mats. Whats the best way to accurately give an individual count of each size? Considering there is dead space in the stacks with spacers. Right now still using a P4PV2, trying to upgrade to the 3E and a 210 but for now that and the air 2s is what I am running Thanks for any help and advice you can give. Is one software better than the other for this?
