Yuneec Launches First Commercial Drone

Does Yuneec use forced geofencing in its firmware? That’s been a huge pia with DJI.

I’m also very curious how/how well the tethering works. How high? How well does it work in wind?

Hi,

The H520 is not Yuneec's first commercial drone. There was the H920 that I still use today. Unlike the DJI leader, Yuneec does not store all your data or those of your customers (flight data, videos, photos) on cloud servers. In case of hacking DJI servers, what will your customers think of seeing their photos or videos in nature ? You better have a good insurance !!!!
Read this online article:
Drone maker DJI offers up to $145,000 bounty for information on Chinese illegal flights. - sUAS News - The Business of Drones
I quote the article: "How did Kevin crack DJI’s data ? He found the password on Github".
GitHub is a web-based hosting service for version control using git. It is mostly used for computer code.

Moreover, in Europe, when you are professionals, by showing the official papers that proves it and by signing a contractual commitment in case of resale ..., Yuneec gives you a tool to completely remove the No Fly Zones (NFZ), by making the professionals responsible. There is no point in having a quality drone if you can not use it because the NFZ prevents you from take off, even when you have all the necessary permissions, as a professional, sometimes even in front of your customers, according to the good wishes of NFZ system who run when it want. Many professionals complain about DJI NFZs in France and Europe, because they do not always work well, waste time and money. They understand for amateurs, but less for them, declared professionals and trained.

Otherwise, DJI has a marketing policy copied largely on Apple. Programmed obsolescence with new model every six months, expensive accessories that double or triple the basic price to be able to work properly (Inspire 2 for example). When one model pushes another, cameras or accessories are no longer compatible with the old models. The client is often beta-tester embedded software that often go out too quickly and not enough tested. Yuneec announced that the future C23 camera that will equip the Yuneec Typhoon H Plus will also be compatible with the previous model H480. Otherwise, I work a lot at the seaside with strong wind and I particularly appreciate the qualities of the H480 and H920 in the wind. We must not forget security. The H480 or H520 or H920 or H920 Plus or H Plus from Yuneec are hexacopter drones, with in addition a flight mode on 5 engines, if a propeller or a motor or ESC loose. With a quadricopter, in case of failure, it is a crash insured, even with the best of the pilots.

All manufacturers have advantages and disadvantages. Yuneec does not listen enough his customers, especially in the US, from what I can read everywhere. He made strategic mistakes, should hire photo and video specialists in his teams. A lens hood is an inexpensive accessory to manufacture and permit to approach the axis of the sun to take pictures in wide angle. We are still waiting for it. His CG03 camera has changed little since (CG03+) a few years with a small sensor. Today there is the Panasonic Lumix GH5. Yuneec propose his old CG04 (Panasonic Lumix GH4 light by Yuneec) for the Tornado H920 Plus. This is enough for a lot of applications but not at the peak in terms of sensor. On the other hand, the E90 (camera for H520) and C23 (camera similar for H Plus & H480) cameras bring a progress, but not a technical revolution. Tornado H920 Plus had problem with stock LiPo batteries, with low autonomy (10 mn). Today, Yuneec Europe propose a solution with new LiPo batteries and enough autonomy (20 mm). Tornado H920 Plus is a product not sufficiently tested before being launched. However, it would not be enough to make it a quality professional platform for the broadcast, movies and photo fields.

UAVToolbox it is a noce third party app specifically for the Yuneec Typhoon H480. I use it all the times. It run with Typhoon H520 today.

For wind limits recommended by manufacters, for DJI and Yuneec drones, look at the first table on this page of my blog, in French. You should understand even without translation from Google translate: Vent, direction, vitesse et drone

A video of a wind test in English, at Last Vegas (USA), on 3.5.2017, for Yuneec H520, DJI Inspire and Phantom 4.
With winds of 32 mph and gusts over 50 mph:

Ive been considering the H520 some. Everyones insight is really appreciated.

I fly the H480, and I really enjoy the idea having gears up, 360° continuous panning, 6 engines and NFW. (you have to be 107 certified to get the NFW).
Only down fall for me at this time is the camera, I would like to see an improvement. Dji's camera quality is much better when it comes to video and pics. However, the new H+ is coming out with a better camera, we'll see?

I've flown mine in winds above 20mph, stability was great. Though I was just a bit nervous and landing was catching it by hand.

Believe it or not One of my Little UAVs , Mavic Pro with its lower profile handles high winds very well, bit of backwards to start with but but once corrected it's fine. , Had it in 50km/hr+ winds ,so not as windy as the above test, but at height pretty close. Much better than my Phantom 3 in any case.
