Hi There, moved from Ireland to the states back in '09, have always had a passion for photography and now that the drone business has taken off (pun intended) I'm really enjoying having this extra medium to work with. Right now I'm using my drones purely for photography, videography and recreational use, but I'm very interested in learning about survey missions.

Hoping to learn from here, make some contacts and who knows what the future will hold down the road.

Hello fellow PNW flyers! I'm hoping this is a good place for us all to learn the professional side of droning on (pun intended) but to also stand together and help shape this industry going forward. Maybe exchange some good flying locations too!

Hello to you guys in Oregon. I just got a notice that here in Washington, HB1049 has just been re-introduced into committee. It's one of those terrible ideas that tries to make flying over private property with uas, at any altitude, illegal. If you fly in Washington, or know others that do, please let them know to speak out. Thanks!

I can see what they are trying to do with this bill, however it's not very well thought out. Sure, I can understand property owners (who don't know anything about drones) not wanting a drone hovering over their property. I believe I heard about another state putting in a similar bill, but it specifically defined that you couldn't fly over someone's property for something like 30 seconds which gives operators a lot more lee way. What we have here is a case of uneducated people (regarding drones) wanting to protect their privacy with a blanket bill that actually puts far too much restrictions on drone operators. Whereas the bill does say you can fly with permission via" federal authorization", it doesn't say which branch of government you must contact (federal authorities is not a branch of government). Who will be handling the inquiries, what are their capabilities and turn around time? Will there be a fee involved? Someone needs to contact the WA newspapers and tv stations so they can question the bill creator directly and get some proper answers out of him. Otherwise this thing may just get passed. It's a very bad bill.

The bill first surfaced over a year ago and I sent in comment to my local reps and to the committee vice-chair (the committee chair is the author). It is really poorly written and I pointed it out to them. The fact is that the FAA does give permission so that makes much of the bill null.

He, the author, tries to exclude "remote controlled" aircraft that cannot "fly autonomously" from the bill. Problems again because autonomous flight can be disabled and now it's just an "RC". It's clear that it is written by someone that doesn't understand and has penned a knee-jerk reaction.

The goal of the bill is understandable, to give folks reasonable relief if there if someone that is being a nuisance. The problem is there are already ordinances against nuisance behavior with or without an rc drone.

Aye, and it's these knee jerk reactions bills by uneducated people (regarding drones) that's going to cause issues. Then again if the bill goes through and it's so badly written, that leaves a lot of loop holes for people to get out of trouble, so that's good/bad. Like the mobile phone laws while driving. When they first came out they said (in short) "you can't make or take phone calls while driving in your vehicle". So you get pulled over by the police, they say "hey you were making a phone call on your phone" and way to get out of it was "No officer, I was actually surfing the internet and looking at highly disturbing porn...". Point being the law specifically said it was illegal to make or take calls, it did not address surfing the internet, writing emails, paying a bill online..........

Hence later the law was changed to a ban on operating handheld electronics (such as phones) while driving (thus covering the above poor excuse).

My guess it that if it goes through, the loop holes will be used which will result in someone having to write a better bill. Now if you don't mind I have to drive to the shops while watching a movie on my VR headset...... hey, I'm not holding it in my hand!
